WASHINGTON - Every little cough may have Americans worrying about SARS, but there's good news about the sniffles: There are much fewer of them this year.
The common flu is at record low levels this winter, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Doctors don't know why, but not once during flu season did the virus produce epidemic numbers of deaths in the United States. The number of flu deaths it takes to reach epidemic proportions varies, but generally it is about 10 percent of total deaths.
On average, flu kills about 36,000 Americans a year. To determine how widespread influenza is, the CDC monitors how many people report flulike illnesses to certain sentinel doctors. This year that number peaked at 3.2 percent of all doctor visits in early February, a number that tied last year for a record low.
What has really made a difference is the most deadly type of flu, Type AH3N2, has barely surfaced this year.
Also, more Americans are getting flu shots, said Robert Siegel, a professor of microbiology at Stanford University, noting that warmer weather from climate change or shifts in where people live could also have something to do with it.
